Are cabins safe?
We all know to take care when we are in the mountains. Slippery stones, falling rocks,
thunderstorms and many more dangers await us in the mountains. When we reach the cabin we
think we are safe. But are we????
Karwendelhaus
I was in the Karwendel for the first time. Our very enthusiastic guide led us safely from cabin to
cabin and from peak to peak, until we could not put one foot before the other.
That day it was very crowded in the Karwendelhaus and the keeper asked our guide to go to the
winterraum in the basement of the cabin after we ate, so other people could sit on our places and
get something to eat. Of course we had no problem with that and moved to it. There was a stove
in the room and our guide, still enthusiastic and energetic, ran out to get some wood and ran in
again, with the wood piled on his arms. As he ran in, he didn't notice the doorpost and, at full
speed, hit it with his head. The bang was heard on the top floor (3 high) of the cabin. The
diagnose was quickly made by a present doctor: concussion of the brain. He was brought down to
a hospital that same night.
I can Laugh
I could laugh about this story but some years later a similar thing happened to me on a tour to the
gross venediger (ok not Karwendel bu anyway...). We just came down from reaching this highest
peak but one of Austria and went into the cabin. I rushed down to wash myself (it is a pretty
heavy tour via ice) and in the act doing so I quickly turned at some moment and banged my knee
into the washbasin. That was the end of that holiday.
